Buying and Registering iCal

Calendars Net is based on iCal, a program produced by Brownbear Software. If you would like to buy iCal to install it on your own WindowsNT or Windows2000 web server, please contact Brownbear.

You do not need to buy iCal in order to use Calendars Net.

Exchanging Data with Microsoft Outlook and Other Programs - http://www.calendars.net/updown.htm

Data Importing: iCal 3.5+ allows the user to import data from a MS Outlook calendar and to export data that an Outlook calendar can use. It can also import and export files using the iCal field format, but that is pretty complicated.

To import your Outlook calendar data into your Calendars Net calendar:

  1. In Outlook, export your Outlook calendar to a comma separated values (.csv) text file.
  2. Outlook by default will name the .csv file it generates "outlook.csv." You must change the name of that file on your computer to the name of your calendar but with .csv on the end, like "johncalendar.csv".
  3. Outlook often produces a .csv file with a blank line at the bottom. You must delete this line, so that the last thing in the .csv file is the last character on a line that actually contains an event. You can delete the blank line using an ASCII text editor, such as MS Notepad or MS Wordpad.
  4. Use the Calendars Net Upload System to upload to Calendars Net the .csv file generated on your computer by Outlook.
  5. Then, on your Calendars Net calendar, go to Administer This Calendar, Data Importing. Choose "CSV MS Outlook" as the file type and enter the name of the .csv file you uploaded in the Import Server File. Then hit the Import File button.

Data Exporting: You can export your Calendars Net data into MS Outllook or other programs this way:

  1. With your Calendars Net calendar, go to Administer, Data Exporting and complete the form. The result will be the generation of a file with the name of your calendar but with a .csv extension. You will not be able to click on this file to download it; that is what we are working to fix. Instead:
  2. Use the Calendars Net Download System to download this CSV file. Just put the name of the file (your calendar's name with .csv extension) in the box calling for Full Name of Your Calendar Data File to Download.

These steps will produce a CSV file on your computer that MS Outlook can import.

iCal Tutorial: Email Notification - http://www.calendars.net/tutemail.htm

iCal supports email notification. The email capability is an optional feature. A couple of basic requirements to use the Email notification capabilities.
    1. iCal must be run on an NT (or Windows 2000)
    2. An SMTP server must be accessible for sending Email

There are several features wrapped around email notification.

 1. Auditing calendar activity. This allows the administrator of a calendar to be notified when events are added, update or deleted.
 2. Users notifying people when events are added or updated. A person that adds or updates an event to a calendar can have this information emailed to any number of people. (notifying people of a staff meeting)
 3. Event Reminders. You can select to be reminded of upcoming events. You can be notified from 15 minutes to two weeks in advance.

The Email Configuration page is available to the calendar administrator. A User Name and Password is required with the registered version of iCal. The values that must be entered are the Registration Name and Registration Number that you were assigned when ordering the Professional version of iCal. You can find these values on the About Tab of the iCal property page.

The Email Configuration page is were you can enable Email for the iCal system. On this page you will define the SMTP mail server and a few other optional values. When the email system is enabled, the main administration screen for each calendar will have a link to an Email Notification setup form. This will allow custom Email configuration for each calendar.
